Before you start
Confirm that non-working residence suits your plans. Check the current IPREM-based financial test, healthcare evidence and document rules with the responsible consulate, then prepare the arrival and residence-card tasks.
Make sure non-working residence fits the way you will live
The Spanish Consulate in London’s non-working residence guidance describes a route without gainful work or professional activity. It is not a work permit. If you intend to keep consulting, run a business or work remotely for a UK employer, obtain advice about the appropriate route before relying on this one.
Explain the whole household’s circumstances when seeking that advice. A couple may have different nationalities, existing rights or intended activities. New applicants should also distinguish their position from people whose residence predates the end of the Brexit transition. The official living-in-Spain guide separates current applications from Withdrawal Agreement arrangements. Start with the route that applies to you, then use our Spain moving guide to organise the practical work.
Use the current financial formula, then test your real budget
The Spanish residence regulations set the financial test by reference to IPREM, Spain’s public income indicator: 400% for the main applicant, plus 100% for each accompanying family member in their care. Check the applicable current amount, period and evidence with your consulate. A copied euro figure from an older article may use a different year’s reference.
Prepare a clear account of income and funds: who receives them, where they are held and how the supporting records connect. Keep the legal evidence calculation distinct from the amount you need to live comfortably. Use the actual housing choice, healthcare, transport and UK visits in a second budget. Our Spain and UK cost comparison helps structure that exercise without assuming the application threshold will fund every household’s retirement.
Establish healthcare cover before treating the file as complete
London’s guidance requires appropriate public or private insurance with an authorised provider and describes accepted S1 registration evidence. Confirm the exact evidence for your circumstances, including the position of each dependant. Do not purchase a policy solely because its title includes the word “visa”; check what it covers and whether it meets the current requirements.
The UK government’s Spain healthcare guidance explains possible UK-funded cover and the need to register an S1 with the Spanish authorities. Establish eligibility through the relevant service rather than assuming every British retiree is covered. Separately, plan prescriptions, medical records and access to treatment near the proposed home. A holiday healthcare card does not replace a residence healthcare plan.
Prepare documents in the order their validity requires
London’s checklist includes visa and EX-01 forms, passport, photographs, financial and healthcare evidence, a criminal-record certificate and a medical certificate. It also sets document-age, legalisation and translation requirements. For a UK criminal-record check, it specifies ACRO. Family applications require the relevant relationship evidence.
Download the checklist for the responsible consulate and turn it into a tracker. Record the issuing body, date, original, copy, apostille and translation for each item. Check the wording and signature requirements before ordering a medical certificate. The UK apostille guidance explains legalisation, but the receiving authority decides what it needs. Sequence work around an attainable appointment so that a document does not become too old while you wait for another one.
Use the consulate responsible for where you live
London, Manchester and Edinburgh have their own consular arrangements. Establish which office covers your UK address before choosing a booking channel. The London consular-services page directs its visa appointments through BLS. Follow the responsible office’s current route rather than a link passed around in an old discussion.
Keep the appointment confirmation, submission receipt and any request for further evidence together. Leave room in the household plan for questions or additional documents. A processing period described by an authority is not the same as a guaranteed date for collecting keys or dispatching furniture. Ask which bookings can remain flexible, and keep contact details current so that an avoidable communication problem does not hold up the next step.
Distinguish the visa, identity number and residence card
A visa, an NIE identification number, a TIE residence card and municipal registration serve different purposes. Do not treat holding an NIE or buying a Spanish property as completion of the residence process. GOV.UK explains that arrival registration includes residence formalities and the town-hall register, or padrón.
London’s current visa page says the holder has one month after arrival to apply for the foreigner identity card. Check the instructions and dates applicable to your own approval and destination. Keep originals and copies of the application evidence accessible, identify the relevant local office and plan any appointments. Set reminders for future conditions and renewal responsibilities. The move should leave time for administration after travel rather than using every available day for unpacking or visiting family.
Choose a home around an ordinary retirement week
Use the Spain location shortlist to compare actual places, then test the homes that fit your budget. Walk to shops, transport and medical services. Consider how the property functions during the season when you are not viewing, and whether it will remain usable if mobility or driving needs change.
If renting first, ask what is furnished and whether the entrance, lift and rooms accommodate the belongings you intend to bring. Keep property advice and immigration advice connected without treating one as a substitute for the other. If Portugal is also under consideration, compare our Portugal D7 guide using separate evidence and cost sheets. The two countries’ routes should not be treated as interchangeable retirement paperwork.
Set a removal plan that follows the approved arrangements
Make a short handover plan with separate milestones for the decision, travel, housing access and shipment. Give the removal team the actual destination, inventory and access information, including stairs, building delivery rules and the legal unloading place. Ask how a change in the date or address would affect the quote.
Discuss removals to Spain around the household you are taking. If you need a gap between homes, compare storage with the cost of handling and later delivery included. Carry passports, visa papers, appointment records and healthcare essentials yourself. Keep a first-use set of clothing and household items separate so that the first days are manageable while the main shipment is still in transit.
Common questions
Can I work remotely on Spain’s non-lucrative residence route?
The route is for residence without gainful work or professional activity and does not provide a work permit. Obtain advice about the appropriate route before planning remote work, consultancy or business activity.
How much income is needed for a Spain retirement visa?
The financial test uses 400% of IPREM for the main applicant and an additional 100% for each accompanying family member in their care. Check the current amount, required period and acceptable evidence with the responsible consulate.
Does an NIE mean I have residence permission?
No. An identification number, property ownership and permission to reside are different matters. Follow the applicable visa, residence-card and local-registration requirements for your circumstances.
