Moving costs
How Much Does It Cost to Move to Oman?
There is no single fixed price for moving from the UK to Oman. The cost
depends on the shipment volume, collection and delivery addresses,
shipping method, packing requirements, customs process and any storage or
specialist services.
Shipment Volume
Household sea-freight shipments are commonly calculated by volume. The
more space the belongings occupy, the more packing material, labour,
warehouse capacity and container space are required.
A home or video survey is more useful than estimating from the number of
bedrooms. Two properties with the same number of rooms can contain very
different volumes.
Shared or Dedicated Container
Shared-container shipping is usually more economical for a smaller move
because the customer pays for only part of the container. A dedicated
container costs more overall but may be suitable for a complete
household.
Sea Freight or Air Freight
Sea freight generally offers better value for furniture and larger
volumes. Air freight provides speed but is normally more expensive for
heavy or bulky belongings.
UK Collection Access
Parking, stairs, lifts, long carries and restricted vehicle access can
affect the collection cost. Give accurate information before the quote is
confirmed.
Oman Delivery Location
The final destination affects the cost. A shipment delivered to Muscat
from Sohar involves an inland road movement, while a consignment for
Salalah may use a different port and route. Nizwa, Sur, Duqm and more
remote locations require additional planning.
Professional Packing
Standard export packing, specialist crating, artwork preparation,
furniture dismantling, piano handling and high-value goods all affect the
final quotation.
Customs Duty and Tax
Oman Customs provides an exemption framework for personal effects and
used household belongings when they are personal in nature, in
non-commercial quantities and arrive from the person's country of
residence. The exemption remains subject to customs restrictions,
supporting documents and inspection.
The exemption does not automatically cover vehicles or goods of a
special nature. New goods, commercial quantities and restricted
categories may be treated differently and can attract duty, tax, permit
or examination charges.
Do not assume that every item will enter free of charge. Oman Customs
makes the final assessment based on the customer's status, documents,
inventory, condition, value and quantity of the goods.
Storage and Delay Charges
Incomplete documents or delayed authorisation can lead to port,
warehouse, demurrage, handling or inspection charges. Prepare the
clearance file before the shipment arrives.
